HOWARD R. ALTER, JR. R.I.P.

My old boss, mentor, friend and Theta Chi Fraternity legend passed away last week. His obituary is here, which includes a link to his obituary in the local Pittsburgh newspaper.

I have hundreds of "Uncle Howie" stories, most of which would be be indecipherable to non-Theta Chis due to all the obscure and personal references. So instead of trotting them out, I'll just post below the tribute I wrote for him on the occasion of his 80th birthday in 1998. (Click below where it says "more")

One tidbit - if you want to know what Howard sounded like in his prime, the best approximation I can think of is Otho, from Beetle Juice (especially the passage starting at about 4:45)

Now imagine that voice reciting this, his favorite poem, a poignant metaphor for Brotherhood:

An old man, going a lone highway,
Came, at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near,
"You are wasting strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way;
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide--
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head:
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today
A youth, whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm, that has been naught to me,
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."

WORD OF THE DAY: FLATTERY + SATIRE = FLATTIRE

This delightful neologism describes perfectly the self-serving liberal documentaries and news segments that make up the bulk of modern video production.

My favorite example is the old TV show "Designing Women", which never failed to feature one of the characters spouting some pompous leftist commentary, always non sequitur, to which the audience would invariably hoot and applaud with approval.

Does YouTube provide an example? Why yes, yes it does:

"TYRANNY IS ALWAYS WHIMSICAL"

So says Mark Steyn. Please read his remarks to the students of Hillsdale College, and tell me in the comments which of his points you disagree with.

If you find little to disagree with, then our path forward is clear: shrink government at all levels. Vote for no one that will not pledge to cut the size and spending of government. Start by voting against California propositions 1-A and 1-B.

If you disagree with some or all of his points, then be prepared for an ugly fight. Because the people who pay for government are "going Galt", and previously complacent taxpayers are now actively opposing government growth via "Tea Parties", all to prevent the Europeanization of America.

These are people who do not look to government for answers; they do not expect other people to pay for their lives, like the core Democrats and ACORN types.  They are the hard-working, successful free Americans who have up to now tolerated the growth of government. But now these people have been roused to action, and as they focus on their task, the lazy, incompetent, overpaid dolts who currently run most government operations will he helpless to resist.

Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama are not competent enough on their own to run a small business, but through the power of liberal groupthink, and their own shameless applications of the Alinsky model, they have risen to the highest levels of government. As I predicted last July, they have been unable to restrain themselves or their followers, and in their rush to grab power, they have drawn the attention of the successful free citizens.

All the gassy news stories about the Republican Party searching for its soul, or looking for a new Reagan, or predicting the permanent liberal Democrat majority, are fatuous blather, similar in nature to all the predictions in the 70's and 80's of the inevitability of a dominant Soviet Union.

All the "moderate" voters who fell for the Obama myth have had their eyes opened in the last 100 days, and they will quietly vote for government shrinkers in 2010, shocking the punditocracy.  And all the liberal and radical leftists who last year did anything and everything they could to help Obama win will stay home, because 1) they are basically lazy losers, and 2) Obama is boning them left and right as he tries to pull off the Clinton "triangulation" strategy for 2012.

He will fail. He will Jimmy Carter himself right out of office, and the Republican who follows him will look Reganesque in comparison regardless of rhetorical or governing skills.

Bank on it.

AND WHILE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT OF LYING

Obama is wildly popular, and the people of the United States are enthusiastically behind him and his policies. Right?

Then why does the DNC have to fudge petition numbers by making copies and counting the copies as legit signatures?

Maybe because Obama is not as popular as they think, and his policies are scaring all but the lamest of loser liberals.

Karl Rove did this all the time for Bush, though, didn't he?

THE GREATEST LIE EVER TOLD

One of the main justifications for combating AGW is the feared rise of sea levels. As is most of the Global Warming hysteria, it's a lie.

Maybe one day we'll all look back on this an laugh. But for now, we need to fight these con men with everything we have. Facts will do nicely, such as those presented in this article.

The reason why Dr Mörner, formerly a Stockholm professor, is so certain that these claims about sea level rise are 100 per cent wrong is that they are all based on computer model predictions, whereas his findings are based on "going into the field to observe what is actually happening in the real world".

What a concept - direct scientific observation.

ONE MORE FROM NRO

Deroy Murdock reviews the basics of what Obama & Congress just did to our financial system.

I like this line best:

Think of the bailout as $4.17 trillion in spending on a credit card with a $12.8 trillion limit.
And our total annual GDP is $13.4 trillion. Do you have a credit card with a limit equal to your annual income? If so, do you plan to max it out? On top of all your existing mortgages and debt?

I didn't think so.

NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE IS HITTING ON ALL CYLINDERS

I'm way behind on my reading, so here's a batch of links courtesy The Corner at National Review Online culled out as I chew through a weeks' worth of postings.

More evidence of John Galt Lite.

Jonah Goldberg does a nice job of encapsulating the basics of the American core belief of individual liberty. This short post could be a stump speech for any politician who wants to restore American greatness. As usual, this touches off a string of counterpoints and addenda, all worth reading. Just scroll up from this post.

At last, mark-to-market gets some relief. This rule was tightened just at the wrong time, and helped grease the skids as the market headed south. The change in wording is subtle but significant.

I never thought I'd find another humor cum politics writer I liked as much PJ O'Rourke, the modern reincarnation of Mark Twain himself. Then Mark Steyn came along, and I thought, now he's the greatest. No harsh on PJ's stature, just bravo Steyn. But now The Corner at NRO has had some posts from one Denis Boyles (gotta be an Irishman, right?) , and every one of them rocks. So I go to send him a mash note, and his contact link goes to his web site, and his opening splash page is a personal caricature by Mort F'n Drucker! My all time favorite caricaturist and heart & soul of the heyday of Mad Magizine! I haven't been so jealous since Daffy Duck told Drew Carey "You ain't just whistling Dixie, fat boy!"

I see that Boyles has a passel of books out, so I'm going to get busy and get caught up with his oeuvre.

You'd think that Barack "Don't Call Me Hussein" Obama  would do a better job hiding his fealty to the King of Saudi Arabia than this. I remember when people were worried that JFK would be controlled by the Pope in conflict with American priorities. In comparison, this looks like the "offer" scene from the Godfather. Not the Manchurian Candidate, but maybe the Riyadhi President? Far fetched? Whacko conspiracy talk? Then why the hell else would a tough Chicago pol curtsey to this camel jockey?

Jonah again, this time his annual tax rant. Obama convened a blue ribbon panel to study tax simplification, which practically guarantees that it'll get more complicated. This is one of those things that Only Obama could do, and he won't. There is just too much cover in the current tax and budget system for a hard-liberal street pol to give up. Especially now that he has hocked everything from the Washington Monument to Mount Rushmore to finance his fascism.

An ancient tax system gets new life as carbon cap-n-trade: tax farming. In fact, wasn't that the reason that Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem 2009 years ago? But no, that's not a good analogy; Obama is the new Jesus, so the timing is off.

Look out, Mad Mullahs of Iran: here come the Jews. And they will not be gentle. Look for Iran's vaunted air defense system to perform about as well as Saddam Hussein's - that is to say, not at all. I anticipate stories of high comedy to come from the aftermath. You know, something like the Three Stooges trying to fire an SA-6? Right out of Iran's Funniest Military Security Cam Outtakes. What do they expect when they buy all that used Russian crap that has failed to stop Western air power for 40 years? Last time the Russian gear was even close to good enough was Vietnam, and they've been losing ground ever since.

HE PRACTICED ANIMAL HUSBANDRY UNTIL THEY CAUGHT HIM AT IT ONE DAY.

An that's not the funny part. There's a state senator for Florida that does not know what the term "husbandry" means.

The woman has a Master's Degree. And sits on both the K-12 and Higher Education committees.

Florida taxpayers can be proud.

LET'S SEE - FREEMAN DYSON OR AL GORE? TOUGH CHOICE, THAT.

The Goose passes this one along.

Have I got this straight? The most revered and brilliant scientist of the last 50 years says that he thinks the global warmists are members of "a secular religion" and the best his critics can do is claim that he's suddenly, and selectively, senile?

Typical. Pathetic. Shameful. Not a sou should we spend on climate change.

IGNORE HUMAN NATURE AT YOUR PERIL

The best way to save energy is by forcing people to change the way they live, usually through new federal mandates, right?

Wrong. They call it the Snackwell Effect. With me, it's the double flush of the "low-flow" toilet.

And here's another example - dishwasher detergent smuggling and excessive pots-n-pans cycles.

OBAMA IS NOT KENNEDY, OR CARTER, OR CLINTON - HE'S LBJ.

According to this analysis, the Republican bounce-back year of 1966 mid-term elections better fits our current situation than does the 1994 Newt Gingrich - Contract With America class.

Hope not. That means the repeats of Nixon, Ford and Carter are still to come before we get another Reagan.

Ugh.

UNIONS MUST GO

We will not fix our local, state or federal government financing problems until all public employees are freed from the extortionate visegrip of union membership.

Fortunately, the city of Vallejo just won approval from a judge to void all union contracts through bankruptcy.

Well! That settles it, then! Bankruptcy for everybody!

OKAY, YOU CAN'T SAY THIS ISN'T SCIENTIFIC

It's right in the name, for cryin' out loud. "The science" says (gasp) Effort=Success in academics.

Not "inspiration" (got that, Bill Gates?)
Not "self esteem."
Not "learning strategies."
And not "critical thinking."

EFFORT.

Period. Full Stop.

LOTSA LINKS

The old media dips it's toes in the Internet, people find cool ways to exploit their content, old media tries to cover up, to no avail.

You are now exhaling a pollutant. At your next visit to the dentist you will find an EPA man in the lobby measuring you for a catalytic converter, with two inputs. Think about it.

Is this the historical underpinning for the story of Biggus Dickus?

The decline of Los Angeles is now so obvious even the geographers can tell. All the great cities that have indulged in neo-socialist democrat mayors have paid dearly - Detroit (the last 25 years), New York (remember Dinkins?), and now LA and SF. What's worse, whole states are getting hit now, thanks to Governors like Arnold (he's as much of a Republican as Bloomberg - total Euro statist types) and of course, or present Congress and President.

Instead of putting us trillions into debt, Obama and Congress need to read this simple "Cure for Poverty".

No flock of links from JBD would be complete without a nice fat fish-slap at the global warming goons.

Or maybe two, or even four, for good measure. You think this newly confirmed natural temperature oscillation has anything to do with, I don't know, the Sun? And if, as Al Gore asserts, "the science is settled!", then is this not science? And who came up with the asinine phrase "the science", anyway? And has "the science" been always been a reliable predictor of the future?

There is one reason why our current finaincial mayhem looks so familiar to me - I've already lived through it once.

Gonna take us 15-20 years to get it back on track, if we don't reverse course in 2010. Sez me? Yeah, and sez The Oracle.

And when we do rebuild, chances are very few of the companies that are on top today will still be around. Which is not bad, but given how the current administration refuses to let bad businesses die their natural deaths, this healthy process is being artificially warped, and like the pressure that builds up in a fault line, will eventually cause a catastrophic break.

So are there any jobs to be had out there? Here's a guy who found 50 jobs in all 50 states in 50 weeks. For all those looking, take to heart his basic philosophy - any job is a good one. Don't say no to anything - take any job that pays. And I quote:

"I recommend to network and travel. Be willing to try anything. Nowadays, you can't be too picky, especially if you are a new grad," he said. "It's going to be hard, you are not going to get your dream job on the first day. Step out of your comfort zone."

One reason that hero pilot chose to land in the Hudson River? It's less crowded than the skies over NYC.

Want to see what KC Jones is up to these days? Here's a hint.

Are the Norks preparing for war? Why else would they refuse food aid ahead of testing a new missile by shooting it at Japan? Mighty neighborly, them Commies.

A nice "tick-tock" article on the root causes of our financial distress. The causes are so obvious, even the Canadians can figure it out. And they are not happy about how Obama and Congress are dealing with it.
